Mumbai: In a significant move to deepen Indo-Japanese academic collaboration, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has signed a strategic agreement with Japan’s Tohoku University.
The partnership between India and Japan aims to elevate academic and research excellence, promote innovation, and foster strong industry-academia connections.
Launching the Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE)
As part of the collaboration, the two institutions have signed a joint statement to establish the Tohoku University–IIT Bombay Joint Institute of Excellence (JIE). This initiative will serve as a hub for research and development in key areas such as sustainable energy, artificial intelligence, materials science, and disaster resilience.
Dual Doctoral Degree Program to Foster Global Research Talent
A major highlight of the agreement is the introduction of a Dual Doctoral Degree Program, allowing students to earn joint PhDs from both institutions. This initiative is set to open new pathways for research scholars, fostering deeper integration of academic efforts between India and Japan.
Exchange, Collaboration, and Innovation
The partnership also includes student and faculty exchange programs and collaborative research projects. During the signing event, Prof. Masahiro Yamaguchi outlined the Joint Institute initiative, Prof. Daisuke Komori shared Tohoku University’s research focus, and Prof. P. Seshu presented IIT Bombay’s vision.
This partnership follows a successful Global Immersion Program hosted by IIT Bombay in March 2025 for Tohoku University students. The initiative was widely appreciated and is seen as a step forward in building a lasting academic bridge between the two nations.
