Kolkata: The Kolkata Metro Railway has recorded a 13.30 per cent increase in passenger traffic in FY 2024-25.
Kolkata Metro Railways, the country’s first metro, carried 21.81 crore passengers this year, up from the 19.25 crore it carried in the corresponding period last fiscal.
The Blue Line stretching from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash (New Garia area) was the most popular and utilized corridor of Kolkata Metro.
The Blue Line carried 18.93 crore passengers in FY25, translating into a 5.51% increase over 17.94 crore passengers in FY24.
Green Line 1, which runs between Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector-V, transported 1.41 crore passengers in 2024-25. From carrying 1.22 crore passengers in FY24, the passenger traffic growth was pegged at 15.57 per cent.
Green Line 2, connecting Howrah Maidan to Esplanad, carried 1.39 crore passengers in 2024-25. With a part of this stretch running under River Hooghly, there was tremendous interest after it started last year.
With the stretch between Sealdah and Esplanade nearing completion this year, the Green Line combined is expected to give tough competition to the Blue Line as it runs across the Central Business Districts.
The Purple Line, connecting Joka to Majherhat, recorded a 31.34% increase. 1.76 lakh passengers traveled on this line, up from 1.34 lakh in 2023-24.
The extension of the Purple Line connecting it up to the hub in Esplanade is underway, and the work is expected to take 2-3 years. Only then is the Purple Line expected to witness a spurt in passenger traffic.
The Orange Line linking Kavi Subhash (New Garia area) to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Hospital area) started in 2024-25 only and registered a total footfall of 5.92 lakh passengers.
Once this line ultimately connects to Kolkata Bimanbandar, the passenger volumes will jump. Till then, as the line gets extended to Chingrighata this year, more passengers are likely to utilise the Orange Line.
