Agartala: The Tripura government and BSF are stepping up border flood control measures in Belonia villages bordering Bangladesh, following an embankment being built in Feni district in Bangladesh.
Feni district in Bangladesh borders South Tripura district, where Belonia is located. There are concerns amongst the local population over possible flooding and waterlogging due to the embankment close to the international border.
The administration is expediting flood control work in the area across 43 flood-hit locations. This work will be completed by June, with additional engineers being deputed to strengthen the embankment on the Belonia side.
The Bangladesh embankment in Feni district has been allegedly constructed 15 yards from the zero line at the border. It is 1.5km long and 15-20 ft high and constructed to prevent flooding from the Mahuri river during monsoon.
Bangladesh has also constructed a similar embankment close to Kailashahar under the Unakoti district of Tripura. This has fuelled similar apprehension of flooding and waterlogging.
According to the border pact, no permanent construction can take place within 150 yards of the Zero line.
While this issue would be taken up separately, currently, the administration is focusing on bolstering the flood control measures.
