Gangtok: The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a new line in Sikkim for a cost of Rs 2.25 crore.
The Northeast Frontier Railway will execute this project connecting Melli to Dental via Jorethang and Legship. This will be a major step forward in expanding rail connectivity to the southern and western regions of Sikkim.
The proposed route aims to link remote towns like Dentam, located near the India-Nepal border area, Chiwa Bhanjyang, with the national railway network.
The approximately 75km railway line will be a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo Railway line, expected to be operational by 2027.
Melli will serve as a junction for the proposed extension. Being a key entry point to Southern and Western Sikkim, it could be a catalyst for economic growth in the region.
Not only will it integrate the region into the national transportation system, it will also enhance access, promote tourism, boost trade and create employment opportunities in Gyalshing and surrounding areas.
