Kharagpur: Suman Chakraborty has been appointed as the director of IIT Kharagpur. He is currently a professor at the mechanical engineering department of IIT Kharagpur.
The post of the full-term director at the IIT Kharagpur fell vacant after the tenure of V K Tewari ended on 31 December.
Amit Patra, director, IIT BHU, has been officiating as acting director of IIT Kharagpur since 1 January.
Chakrabarty will take charge this week and one of his priority areas will be to stop the spate of student deaths on the campus.
A student of St Lawrence High School, Chakraborty graduated from the mechanical engineering department of Jadavpur University in 1996. He completed his master’s and PhD from IISC Bangalore.
He has also served as the dean of research initiatives at IIT Kharagpur.
