New Delhi: The Central government is set to install 400 new BSNL towers across Naxal-affected and remote regions of Chhattisgarh to bolster digital connectivity, said Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.
The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide in regions long impacted by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), enabling access to essential communication services. According to MoS, the rollout will be carried out in phases, contingent on clearances from security agencies and the forest department.
Chairing a high-level review meeting in Raipur, Pemmasani underscored the Centre’s focused efforts to digitally empower underserved regions. The meeting saw participation from senior officials of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and other key departments.
“BSNL is delivering quality 4G services nationwide. This expansion is a step towards ensuring every last village in India is connected digitally,” the MoS noted.
He also highlighted that development activities in LWE-affected areas are being executed in a “mission mode,” with plans to deliver government services directly to residents in these regions.
Among key measures under consideration are the digitisation of schools to help students prepare for national-level entrance exams like JEE and NEET, as well as support systems for differently-abled students through inclusive education initiatives.
Rapid infrastructure development is becoming visible across deprived, tribal and geographically isolated regions, MoS Pemmasani noted.
