New Delhi: The Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, and NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, have signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to collaborate on a digital remittance initiative. The project aims to enable inward remittances to India through a potential integration of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Interconnection Platform (IP).
This proposed framework is intended to streamline cross-border money transfers by leveraging India’s digital payment infrastructure and the global postal network. The integration could provide a cost-effective and secure alternative to existing remittance services, with particular benefits for Indians residing in regions with limited access to traditional banking.
The collaboration seeks to enable real-time transfers to beneficiaries in India using UPI, while the UPU-IP platform would facilitate interoperability between postal operators globally. Officials suggest that such a system may reduce transaction costs, enhance transparency, and improve the speed of remittances.
By combining digital payments with postal infrastructure, the initiative could support financial inclusion for underserved populations, especially in rural and remote areas. The agreement currently outlines exploratory steps and does not indicate a launch timeline.
The move aligns with India’s broader push to position UPI as a viable model for international payment systems through partnerships and system-level interoperability.
