New Delhi: In a step towards integrating artificial intelligence into journalism education and practice, Google has partnered with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) to launch a 10-week AI training programme aimed at newsroom professionals and media educators in India.
The programme, part of the Google News Initiative (GNI), will be conducted in a hybrid format and is designed to offer foundational understanding of AI along with hands-on experience using specific Google tools. These include NotebookLM, Gemini, AI Studio, and Pinpoint tools that help journalists streamline reporting processes, organise information, and improve content generation workflows.
The collaboration also involves training support from How India Lives, a data insights firm. The programme seeks to address a growing need for AI literacy in Indian newsrooms, where technology adoption remains uneven, especially in small and regional media outlets.
Participants will engage in weekly sessions that include deep-dives, practical exercises, mentoring, and problem-solving focused on real newsroom use-cases. The curriculum has been structured to help media professionals integrate AI tools responsibly and effectively into editorial tasks such as research, content generation, and verification.
The training will also extend to media educators and students across IIMC’s six campuses located in Delhi, Dhenkanal, Aizawl, Amravati, Kottayam, and Jammu. This signals an institutional effort to embed AI capabilities into journalism pedagogy, ensuring that future professionals are prepared for evolving newsroom requirements.
“As AI transforms journalism, this initiative will help media educators and professionals stay ahead,” said Nimish Rustagi, Registrar, IIMC. “We intend to promote responsible innovation and creativity in storytelling.”
