Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has approved the first installment of Rs 95 crore for the construction of dams under the Yamuna Basin Development Project.Â
The move aims to tackle the persistent water scarcity in the state’s drought-prone Shekhawati region.
The funds will go towards Rajasthan’s share in the construction of the Renukaji Dam in Himachal Pradesh and the Lakhwar Dam in Uttarakhand. Both dams are part of the upper Yamuna basin and will play a key role in storing and channeling excess water from the basin to water-starved regions.
According to an official statement, this initiative is part of a broader Rs 11,320 crore interstate project. Rajasthan’s total contribution to the project is estimated at Rs 216 crore. The aim is to divert surplus water from the Yamuna basin in Haryana to regions in Rajasthan that face acute water shortages, especially Shekhawati.
Officials said that the Rs 95 crore allocation will help accelerate construction work and ensure a timely water supply to the state. Once completed, the dams will provide year-round water availability to large parts of Rajasthan, offering much-needed relief to farmers and residents in arid zones.
