Kolkata: The West Bengal government has taken up a special initiative to construct a shopping mall in the headquarters of all 23 districts of the state, providing a significant boost to the retail sector in the state.
The state government will arrange lands for these shopping malls. These will be provided to the developers for just one rupee.
While the developers can set up the malls as they wish, two floors need to be earmarked for the Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
This will give the SHG members the opportunity to sell their products throughout the year from a fixed location. As of now, they are mostly selling their products at fairs organised by the state government.
The malls can be six, seven or eight stories high. But the remaining space can be used for cinema halls, coffee shops etc.
The two floors earmarked for the SHGs will sell products which are famous in the particular districts.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the leather and cottage industry centre ‘Shilpanna’ at Alipore in South Kolkata.
This 46-shop air-conditioned facility will enable SHGS from all districts to sell their wares.
