New Delhi: Indian Railways is preparing to introduce strict baggage regulations for passengers, a move that will bring train travel closer to the standards seen in air travel.
Under the proposed framework, travellers will be required to pass their luggage through electronic weighing machines at major stations, with weight limits and size restrictions strictly monitored. Excess baggage or oversized items will attract additional charges and penalties.
The permissible baggage allowance will vary by class: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC Two Tier, 40 kg for AC Three Tier and Sleeper Class and 35 kg for General Class.
According to reports, railway officials said that even underweight but bulky luggage that obstructs onboard movement will be subject to penalties. Himanshu Shukla, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) of the Prayagraj division, North Central Railway (NCR), reportedly stated that the decision is aimed at ensuring a more efficient and comfortable travel experience, especially for passengers on long-distance railway routes.
The rollout will initially cover key NCR stations, including Prayagraj Junction, Prayagraj Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri and Etawah. At these hubs, passengers will only be allowed onto platforms after their luggage has been weighed and cleared.
Additionally, Indian Railways plans to introduce premium single-brand stores at revamped stations, selling clothing, footwear, electronics, and travel essentials to generate revenue and create an airport-like ambience.
Prayagraj Junction is at the centre of this transformation, undergoing a Rs 960-crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station is being designed as a nine-storey hub with modern lounges, automated ticketing, high-speed Wi-Fi, solar power systems, rainwater harvesting and digital displays.
From December 2026, entry into terminal areas will be permitted only to passengers with valid tickets functioning as “boarding passes,” while platform tickets will serve as “visitor passes.”
