Aizawl: Mizoram is on track to be connected to the Indian Railways network for the first time with the nearing completion of the Bairabi–Sairang New Railway Line Project under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
The long-awaited capital connectivity initiative will extend train services to Sairang, located just a short distance from Aizawl, greatly improving travel options and economic prospects for the hill state.
In preparation for this milestone, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mizoram Government in August to boost both inbound and outbound tourism.
As part of the agreement, IRCTC will act as the front-end marketing partner, while Mizoram Tourism will provide access to its infrastructure, including tourist lodges, and collaborate on curated tour packages.
The initiative also aims to nurture local Destination Management Companies and service providers to offer transport, accommodation and sightseeing, highlighting Mizoram’s vibrant cultural identity, from colourful festivals and bamboo dances to folk music and ceremonial traditions, alongside its natural attractions of emerald valleys, lush hills, waterfalls and heritage sites.
It should be noted that the agreement complements IRCTC’s upcoming “Discover NE Beyond Guwahati” programme, which will feature a special tourist train with Aizawl as a key stop.
