Bengaluru: Namma Metro has revised its Phase 3 alignment by shortening the JP Nagar 4th Phase–Kempapura elevated corridor by 200 metres.
The revised 2.30-km stretch between the Kanteerava Studio flyover and Yeshwantpur railway yard will save approximately Rs 669 crore and simplify construction through a high-density junction.
The alternate route, approved at a recent high-powered committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, replaces the earlier plan that included a detour via Peenya metro station. Instead, the new design proposes a direct connection to the Green Line, facilitated by two travellators, offering an interchange between Peenya and Goraguntepalya stations.
According to the Detailed Project Report, the original alignment required complex engineering work, including a sharp left turn after the Kanteerava Studio flyover, passage through Raja Industrial Estate and an elevated crossing over Tumakuru Road at Peenya station.
The terrain and existing flyover structures would have required constructing viaducts as tall as 46.5 metres to accommodate the steep gradients and operational challenges – significantly raising costs.
At a 14 July review, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) proposed the revised alignment, which will run along the northern end of the Kanteerava Studio flyover and pass through properties of the Air Force and ALISDA, bypassing the bottleneck at Goraguntepalya Junction.
The new plan was earlier presented to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in February during his inspection of metro works between Hebbal and Mysuru Road.
He had given his in-principle approval. Officials say the revised alignment will not only cut costs but also help streamline traffic between Kanteerava Studio and BEL Circle.
