Chennai: The Government of Tamil Nadu has partnered with IIT Madras to establish the Centre for Advanced Semiconductor Technologies in Chennai, marking the first key initiative under the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Mission 2030.
The center will be located at the Central Polytechnic Campus and is expected to house India’s first in situ semiconductor fabrication processing facility. The state has allocated a Rs 100 crore seed grant for the project, which aims to drive applied research, localization of semiconductor technologies, prototyping, and startup incubation.
A core component of the initiative is the ‘Schools of Semiconductors’ programme, which will train over 4,500 professionals through short-term skilling modules. The training effort will be jointly implemented by the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation and the Department of Industries.
In addition to workforce development, the center aims to support MSME capability building, promote interdisciplinary research, and drive innovation in sectors such as electric mobility, space tech, power electronics, and data infrastructure.
The initiative also plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to align with national semiconductor strategies.
By focusing on end-to-end capabilities, from R&D and design to training and manufacturing, the state aims to build a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem that addresses industry needs while positioning Tamil Nadu as a centre for technological innovation.
