Bengaluru: Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL) has signed an agreement with GAIL Gas Ltd, a subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, to establish a city gas distribution network within the airport city area. The project includes a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure, and other clean energy solutions.
According to BACL, the facility will cater to taxis, buses, logistics fleets, and last-mile connectivity vehicles operating at and around Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. The development also includes non-fuel retail and convenience outlets for public use. Officials said the initiative is expected to integrate energy infrastructure with transport and commercial operations at the airport city.
BACL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates Kempegowda International Airport, has positioned the project as part of its plan to expand sustainable urban infrastructure. The Airport City has previously received the Indian Green Building Council’s Green Cities Platinum Rating.
Industry observers note that the collaboration aligns with broader efforts to expand India’s city gas distribution network. The government has been pushing for greater adoption of natural gas in public and commercial transport to cut emissions and reduce reliance on liquid fuels. Bengaluru’s airport zone, with its concentration of passenger and logistics traffic, represents a significant node for such infrastructure.
The agreement marks another instance of energy companies partnering with urban infrastructure operators to integrate clean fuel distribution points in high-traffic commercial hubs. Analysts point out that such developments are being closely watched as indicators of how urban transport and energy sectors can collaborate to meet India’s clean energy targets.
