Chennai: State-run telecom operator BSNL Chennai Telephones has announced two major service upgrades to strengthen its digital offerings, rolling out eSIM connectivity for local subscribers and launching international prepaid roaming on LTE in partnership with StarHub Singapore.
The twin moves are aimed at keeping pace with the Indian telecom industry’s shift toward digital-first solutions.
The newly introduced eSIM service, now open to customers in Chennai, removes the need for a physical SIM card by embedding subscriber details directly into compatible smartphones. This enables faster activation, stronger security, and the convenience of maintaining multiple operator profiles on a single device.
BSNL is promoting the feature with the tagline “No SIM, No Limits – BSNL eSIM now in Chennai Telephones.” Subscribers can activate the eSIM by visiting BSNL customer service centres or by calling the company’s helpline.
Alongside the eSIM launch, BSNL has begun offering prepaid international roaming on StarHub’s LTE network in Singapore, effective August 4, 2025. This facility allows Chennai users travelling overseas to access mobile data and send text messages without switching providers.
The tariffs include Rs 7.95 per outgoing SMS, while incoming messages remain free. Data usage will be billed at Rs 0.0037 per 10 KB. Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services are still undergoing tests and have not yet been made available.
These upgrades underscore BSNL’s push to modernise its services and align with global telecom trends, positioning the operator to better compete in an increasingly digital and data-driven market.
