New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan has been elected as the Vice President of India, succeeding Jagdeep Dhankhar, after securing victory in a closely fought contest against Opposition candidate and retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
In the election held on 9 September, Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, won 452 first preference votes, while Justice Reddy polled 300. Out of 754 votes cast, 15 were declared invalid. The margin of victory stood at 150 votes.
Radhakrishnan becomes the country’s 15th Vice President, stepping into a role that also makes him the ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His win marks a continuation of the NDA’s hold on the post, but the relatively narrow margin has drawn attention.
This year’s contest contrasts sharply with the 2022 Vice Presidential election, when Jagdeep Dhankhar had defeated Opposition nominee Margaret Alva by a record margin. Dhankhar secured 528 votes against Alva’s 182.
Radhakrishnan will formally assume office after Dhankhar completes his term, with the swearing-in ceremony expected in the coming days.
