Itanagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, today to lay the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore, with a major focus on hydropower development in the state.
The two key projects include the 186 MW Tato Hydroelectric Project and the 240 MW Heo Hydroelectric Project in Shi Yomi district. Together valued at more than Rs 3,700 crore, these initiatives are expected to boost the state’s electricity generation capacity and reduce dependence on external power supply. Hydropower has been a longstanding focus in Arunachal Pradesh, given the state’s significant untapped potential, and these projects mark another step toward expanding renewable energy in the region.
Alongside the hydro projects, the Prime Minister will also launch infrastructure works worth Rs 1,291 crore across multiple sectors, including connectivity and civic amenities. These investments are positioned as part of a broader effort to improve development indicators in the northeastern state, which has faced challenges of terrain and limited access to reliable infrastructure.
During the visit, he is also expected to interact with taxpayers, local traders, and industry representatives in Itanagar. The discussions will touch upon the recent GST rate rationalisation, a move that the Centre has described as aiming to reduce compliance burden and improve ease of doing business, particularly for small and medium enterprises.
Security arrangements have been heightened in Itanagar for the visit, with local administration and central agencies coordinating the event. The projects are likely to play a role in shaping Arunachal’s energy security while contributing to long-term regional development.
