New Delhi: The Union Government has announced a Rs 100 crore scheme to support startups developing green hydrogen technologies.Â
The announcement came as Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the first Annual Green Hydrogen R&D Conference in New Delhi.
Under the scheme, each startup can receive up to Rs 5 crore in grants for piloting projects in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and use.
Building on R&D momentum
The minister said that since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, 23 projects have been awarded in the first round of R&D proposals. They cover areas such as safety and integration, biomass-based production, hydrogen applications, and non-biomass routes.
Research bodies like the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research labs are leading these projects with industry partners.Â
Pilots and infrastructure on the ground
India is also testing hydrogen at scale. A port-based green hydrogen pilot is underway at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu, while five steel sector pilots are using hydrogen for decarbonisation. Hydrogen buses, fueling stations, and retrofitted shipping vessels are already operational.
Officials said hydrogen hubs are being developed at Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin ports. Companies like NTPC, Reliance Industries, and Indian Oil Corporation are investing heavily. The mission targets five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by 125 GW of renewable power.
