New Delhi: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has joined hands with fintech platform Razorpay and OpenAI to introduce AI-powered payments via ChatGPT, marking a new step in digital commerce. The pilot project integrates India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with ChatGPT, allowing users to make purchases and complete transactions directly within the conversational platform.
Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank have been onboarded as banking partners for the initiative, while Bigbasket has become one of the first e-commerce platforms to enable shopping through ChatGPT. The pilot programme aims to test how UPI can securely power AI agents with payment capabilities, allowing them to complete transactions autonomously while keeping users in control.
According to the companies, the goal is to evaluate how this service can be expanded across sectors and how AI can simplify commerce by reducing manual steps in the payment process. OpenAI expressed that combining advanced AI capabilities with UPI’s trusted real-time payment infrastructure could lead to a new era of seamless and secure digital transactions.
UPI, which currently handles more than 20 billion transactions every month, continues to strengthen its position as India’s leading fast payments network. The pilot signals a growing shift toward AI-led financial interactions.
