New Delhi: In a significant development, IAS Sanjay Garg, a 1994-batch officer of the Kerala cadre, has taken charge as the Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) – India’s National Standards Body under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
Garg had been serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at BIS since August 2025 to facilitate a smooth leadership transition.
Over the past three decades, Garg has served in several key administrative roles at both the Central and State levels. His experience covers a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, food supply chains, industrial development, defence production, finance, and social welfare.Â
Before joining BIS, he was the Additional Secretary in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure at ICAR, he focused on bringing digital tools into agricultural research and expanded the Kisan Sarathi portal to help farmers connect directly with scientists for real-time advice. His work there is credited with improving outreach and efficiency in agricultural extension services.
In his new role at BIS, Garg is expected to strengthen India’s standardization and quality assurance systems. He will guide the development of national standards, promote quality certification, and enhance consumer protection mechanisms. He will also lead India’s representation in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
