Kolkata: Kolkata Police will reorganise the boundaries of five out of 91 police stations across Kolkata.
These include the boundaries of Alipore, Park Street, Watgunge, New Market and Ekbalpore police stations, where areas have been added or subtracted.
The new notification expands the jurisdictions of Alipore and Park Street police stations, while the limits of New Market, Watgunge and Ekbalpore have been curtailed.
In an order issued by KP Commissioner Manoj Verma, the changes came into effect from Saturday.
Some areas, which were under New Market PS until Friday, now fall under Park Street, while the entire ward 77, which was secured by Watgunge and Ekbalpore police stations until Friday, is now under the jurisdiction of Alipore PS.
Areas like the Indian Museum, Kyd Street, and parts of Sudder Street – previously under New Market PS – will now fall within the jurisdiction of Park Street PS. Similarly, Alipore police station’s jurisdiction now covers parts of Chetla, Kalighat and Alipore Road belt.
Alipore, which earlier handled a smaller population, will now oversee larger residential clusters, including parts of Bhowanipore. This move brings the entire Bhowanipore assembly segment under the South Division.
The boundary readjustment was undertaken after an internal review of workload distribution, law-and-order challenges, and urban density in the affected areas.
The last few years have seen significant changes in population and administrative pressure. The restructuring was meant to ensure better management and quicker response.
