New Delhi: Airtel Payments Bank has enabled electric vehicle (EV) wallet recharges through the Bharat BillPay (BBPS) system on the Airtel Thanks app, expanding the scope of digital bill payments within India’s EV ecosystem.
Launched in partnership with NPCI Bharat BillPay Limited, the facility allows users to recharge EV charging wallets directly from the app, removing the need to depend solely on individual charging point operators’ payment platforms. The integration brings BBPS-based interoperability to EV wallet recharges, a segment that has so far operated through multiple closed-loop systems.
Using the new feature, users can select the EV recharge option under the bill payments section, enter their registered mobile number linked to the EV wallet, choose a recharge amount, and complete the transaction through Bharat Connect-enabled payment modes. The recharge amount is credited instantly to the wallet, according to the companies.
The service is available to all Airtel Thanks app users, including those who do not hold an Airtel Payments Bank account. By routing EV wallet recharges through BBPS, the platform aims to standardise payments, improve transaction security, and simplify access to charging services for EV users.
The development comes as digital payment systems increasingly support emerging mobility segments, including electric vehicles. With EV adoption rising across urban centres, payment interoperability is seen as a key requirement for reducing friction in charging infrastructure usage and supporting wider consumer adoption.
