New Delhi: The Union Cabinet is expected to approve a major revamp of the national rural employment scheme, including renaming MGNREGA as Pujya Bapu Gramin Rojgar Yojna, officials indicated.
Under the proposed Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Bill, the government will increase the entitlement from 100 days of work to 125 days of guaranteed employment per year for rural poor families willing to undertake unskilled manual labour. The revamped programme is likely to receive an allocation of Rs 1.51 lakh crore, signalling a significant boost to rural livelihood support.
The rural employment guarantee law, first introduced as NREGA in 2005 and later renamed MGNREGA, has been a key social security measure aimed at providing the “right to work” and enhancing economic stability in villages.
The proposed changes mark the first major overhaul of the scheme in nearly two decades, focused on expanding coverage and strengthening income support for rural households.
