New Delhi: Draft electoral rolls for five States and Union Territories undergoing the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) are set to be published on 16 December, with significant voter deletions expected, stated reports.
The exercise covers West Bengal, Rajasthan, Goa, Puducherry and Lakshadweep.
West Bengal is likely to see the highest number of deletions, with around 58 lakh electors identified as deceased, permanently shifted, untraceable or registered at multiple locations.
As reported, officials indicated that notices issued over discrepancies in enumeration forms could far exceed this figure, as many voters failed to establish links with earlier rolls following changes in SIR rules that removed documentation requirements at the enumeration stage.
In Rajasthan, 7.5-8 per cent of the electorate, or roughly 5.46 crore voters, may be removed, while Goa could see deletions of about one lakh names, nearly 8.5 per cent of its electorate. Lakshadweep is expected to record the lowest deletions at around 2.5 per cent.
It should be noted that officials reportedly attributed the large number of irregular entries to gaps in verification norms following amendments to election laws in 2010.
