Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has promoted senior IPS Alok Kumar (1994 batch) to the rank of Director-General of Police and appointed him as the head of the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services.
The move comes as part of a cadre restructuring exercise, with his new role declared equivalent in status to the DGP, Criminal Investigation Department, under IPS pay rules.
Alok Kumar is widely known for his strong track record in public safety and traffic management. His work on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway stands out as a major achievement. Over the years, Kumar has served in several key positions in the Karnataka Police, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, and Deputy Commissioner. He is credited with maintaining law and order in the state capital and curbing criminal activities during his various tenures.
Along with Kumar’s elevation, IPS B. Dayananda (1994 batch), who previously served as ADGP, Prisons and Correctional Services, has been transferred to Police Training, Bengaluru. With his new assignment, Kumar is expected to bring operational discipline, safety-focused reforms, and strong administrative oversight to Karnataka’s correctional system.
