New Delhi: The government has appointed senior Karnataka cadre IAS Darpan Jain as the chief negotiator for the ongoing talks with the United States on the Bilateral Trade Agreement.
The discussions are taking place in New Delhi. A high level US delegation led by Deputy US Trade Representative Ambassador Rick Switzer is in India for the meetings.
Jain currently serves as Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce. His appointment is seen as a strategic move. He has spent six years in the ministry and has worked on several major bilateral trade agreements. He brings experience in international trade and policy negotiations, which will be important as both countries try to resolve issues related to tariffs, market access, and services.
The negotiations will be supervised by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, a former trade negotiator who is familiar with these discussions. The US delegation will meet Indian officials over three days to address pending trade barriers and explore areas where both sides can find common ground.
Jain’s strong academic record supports his professional experience. He holds a B.E. from Delhi University, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and an M.Tech. from IIT Delhi. His background in economics and technology, along with his administrative experience, positions him well to steer the talks during this important phase.
Significance of the talk
The talks come at a sensitive moment. Bilateral trade ties have faced strain after the United States imposed a total tariff of 50 percent on imports from India. This includes 25 percent as reciprocal tariffs and another 25 percent as penalties connected to India’s oil imports from Russia.
Despite the tensions, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently said he is hopeful about progress. He noted that the first tranche of the agreement, which mainly focuses on tariffs, is close to conclusion.
