Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has given the green light for a Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi.
The initiative, approved under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy, 2024, will be developed jointly by IIT-BHU and the Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT), Gorakhpur.
According to officials, the approval was issued by the Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), which aims to boost research, innovation and industry adoption of green hydrogen across the state. The centre will focus on advancing hydrogen production technologies, supporting pilot projects and training skilled manpower for the rapidly growing clean-energy sector.
A standout component of the programme is a proposed hydrogen-powered train connecting Varanasi and Gorakhpur, planned in partnership with the Ministry of Railways. The corridor will serve as a testing ground for hydrogen storage systems, transport mechanisms and real-world operational performance.
In a parallel effort to promote clean mobility, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) intends to deploy hydrogen-fuelled buses along the same route.
