New Delhi: India has installed 4.93 crore smart meters across the country, with 1.6 crore already operating in prepaid mode, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar informed the Lok Sabha on 11 December.
Providing an update on the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the Minister said smart metering work has been sanctioned for 20.33 crore meters, covering 19.79 crore prepaid consumers, 2.11 lakh feeders, and 52.53 lakh distribution transformers (DTs). These approvals were granted based on proposals submitted by states and distribution utilities.
Of the sanctioned meters under RDSS, 3.58 crore have been installed so far, he said. The remaining meters, totalling 4.93 crore, have been deployed by states through their own plans and other schemes.
The large-scale rollout of smart meters is part of the Centre’s efforts to modernise electricity distribution, improve billing and collection efficiency, and reduce power losses across discoms.
