New Delhi: The Indian Railways has added 116 extra coaches across 37 premium trains to manage a sharp rise in passenger demand following widespread disruptions in air travel. The move, effective from 6 December 2025, aims to ease congestion across heavily travelled routes nationwide.
According to the Railway Ministry, Southern Railway carried out the highest number of augmentations, expanding capacity in 18 trains by deploying additional Chair Car and Sleeper Class coaches. Officials said the surge in demand on southern corridors prompted immediate adjustments to ensure adequate seating availability.
Northern Railway has added 3AC and Chair Car coaches to eight trains to support increased movement across major northern routes. Western Railway has also augmented four high-demand trains with 3AC and 2AC coaches, primarily catering to traffic between the western region and the national capital.
In the east, East Central Railway added 2AC coaches to the Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi service over five trips between 6 and 10 December, addressing pressure on the Bihar–Delhi sector. East Coast Railway added 2AC coaches on Bhubaneswar–New Delhi trains across five trips, while Eastern Railway deployed additional Sleeper Class coaches on three trains over six trips on 7 and 8 December.
To support travel in the Northeast, Northeast Frontier Railway attached 3AC and Sleeper coaches to two key trains across eight trips from 6 to 13 December.
Alongside these augmentations, Indian Railways is operating four special services to redistribute passenger load. These include the Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Terminal Special scheduled for four trips between 7 and 9 December, the New Delhi–Jammu region Vande Bharat Special on 6 December, the New Delhi–Mumbai Central Superfast Special on 6 and 7 December, and the Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram one-way special on 6 December.
Officials noted that the adjustments reflect a coordinated response to short-term demand spikes and aim to ensure uninterrupted long-distance connectivity across regions.
