Kolkata: The West Bengal Police plans to stop the 10-minute delivery gimmicks being followed by many e-commerce and food apps.
The state police is soon calling a meeting of 75 such e-commerce and food delivery apps to regulate similar steps.
The Transport department will also join the meeting.
There are many accidents happening on the roads as the delivery boys are wantonly speeding up their bikes to not miss out on thr 10-minute delivery schemes.
As per West Bengal Police records, this year only more than 100 such accidents have taken place, even causing two deaths.
To prevent such accidents, West Bengal Police plans to intervene in the functioning of these 10-minute delivery schemes.
Each app would be instructed not to devise any delivery mechanism that is time-bound.
The delivery boys have to be allowed the normal time needed to ride a distance of 2-3 km. No time restrictions can be imposed to make them ride faster.
No incentive to tempt delivery boys or apply pressure on them would be allowed.
If these restrictions are violated, the police will first send notices. In case the violation is repeated, the police might take legal action to shut down the app.
In addition, each e-commerce and food delivery app needs to have a fixed pick-up point online basis for each specific area.
The delivery boys will have to pick up their stuff from these pick-up points only. The Police need to be provided with a list of all these pick-up points.
The police are also involving the Transport department because, in many cases, the delivery boys do not carry proper registration papers for their two-wheelers.
Many delivery boys are even getting involved in crimes. That is why the police are planning to have a state-wide database of all delivery boys with their names, mobile numbers and bike details.
