Kolkata: A new supercritical thermal power unit of 660 MW will start operations on December 10 at Sagardighi in Murshidabad district, West Bengal.
The plant was announced in 2017 and the West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL) set it up after clearances from the state government and environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forest.
This will be Bengal’s largest and North East India’s first supercritical thermal power plant.
The plant will be built at a cost of over Rs 4567 crore and it will provide power supply to 16,70,000 families.
Both directly and indirectly, the Sagardighi plant will provide jobs to about 26,000 people.
The state’s own generation currently stands at around 6000 MW, out of which WBPDCL generates 4250 MW.
