Thimpu: India and Bhutan recently met at a secretary-level bilateral meeting to discuss transboundary river management.
They also reviewed the Punatsangchhu-I hydroelectric project being implemented in Bhutan in partnership with the Indian government.
The Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project has also been recently commissioned.
The teams discussed strengthening and modernising the existing hydro-meteorological observation network.
The discussions also involved improving data-sharing mechanisms for flood forecasts on transboundary rivers and enhancing technical exchanges.
Last but not least, they also address emerging challenges arising from climate change, such as SD glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and other extreme weather events.
The Indian delegation was led by V L Kantha Rao, Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti. There were other officers from the department as well as from the state governments of Bengal and Assam.
