Noida, May 27 (APAC Media): In a significant legislative move, the Assam Assembly on Wednesday passed the UCC Bill. With this Assam becomes the third state in India after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to approve legislation.
This paves the way for uniform laws governing marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships in the state.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was one of the key promises of BJP ahead of 2026 Assam Assembly Polls. UCC Bill got passed on the final day of the five-day Assembly session despite strong opposition demands for the legislation to be sent to a Select Committee for further discussion and public consultation.
The BJP government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma had introduced the Bill earlier this week.

The Bill, however, will not apply to Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam
Bill Proposes Reforms in Marriage, Divorce and Live-in Laws
As per the Statement of Objects and Reasons attached to the legislation, the proposed law seeks to unify and simplify provisions related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Bill fixes the legal marriage age at 21 years for men and 18 years for women, while also prohibiting polygamy in the state.
The legislation further introduces a formal legal structure for live-in relationships. According to the government, mandatory registration would help protect the rights of partners and provide legal recognition to children born from such unions.
Under the proposed law Couples in live-in relationships must register within one month. Failure to register could attract up to three months imprisonment or a fine of Rs 10,000
Providing false information or concealing facts may lead to imprisonment of up to three months and a fine of up to Rs 25,000.
Uniform Inheritance Rules Proposed Under UCC
The Bill also seeks to modernise succession laws and introduce uniform inheritance provisions for all residents of Assam.
Under intestate succession rules, property distribution would follow a gender-equal order among Class-1 heirs, including Spouse, Children, Parents.
The proposed legislation also allows any adult of sound mind to execute a legally valid written and witnessed will.
Opposition parties including the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal and All India Trinamool Congress opposed the Bill during the Assembly session. Despite uproar the BJP government secured passage of the Bill in the Assembly.
