New Delhi, May 26 (APAC Media): Quadrilateral Security Dialogue foreign ministers from the United States, India, Japan and Australia met in New Delhi on Tuesday and announced a new maritime surveillance initiative aimed at strengthening security in the Indo-Pacific region.
The high-level meeting took place amid rising concerns over maritime security and regional stability, particularly after Iran discussed plans to introduce a permanent tolling mechanism in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important global energy corridors.
Quad Announces Major Frameworks
Following the meeting, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the Indo-Pacific region was facing “acute economic stress” and opposed any proposal involving tolls on critical maritime routes.
The Quad nations also announced plans to collaborate with Fiji on port infrastructure development. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the initiative as an important step towards addressing limited port capacity across Pacific Island nations.
The grouping also finalised the Quad Critical Minerals Framework and signed the India-US Critical Minerals Framework to strengthen cooperation in strategic mineral supply chains. Officials stated that the Quad is also working with other like-minded countries in this sector.
Additionally, the countries announced the Quad Initiative on Indo-Pacific Energy Security, which will focus on collaboration in areas such as technology, energy management, policy coordination, international market analysis, and emergency response exercises.
Growing Strategic Importance of the Quad
The Quad was originally established as a strategic partnership aimed at balancing China’s growing influence across the Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting also comes amid efforts by US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rebuild momentum in bilateral relations following recent tensions over tariffs and trade-related issues.
India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar described the Quad meeting as “substantive and productive,” stating that discussions largely focused on ensuring safe and uninterrupted maritime commerce.
For India, hosting the Quad meeting reflects its strategy of strengthening engagement with Western partners while also continuing active participation in forums such as BRICS, which India is scheduled to host later this year.
