Dispur, July 10 (APAC Media): Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Friday presented the 2026-27 State Budget in the Assembly, outlining a development-focused roadmap centred on employment generation, infrastructure expansion, healthcare, education and welfare.
A major highlight of the Budget was the government’s commitment to create two lakh government jobs, reinforcing its focus on employment-led growth.Â
The Finance Minister also assured that flagship welfare schemes, including Orunodoi, Nijut Moina, and other social security programmes, will continue without interruption.
To strengthen connectivity, the government announced plans to expand Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, into an 80-million-passenger-capacity aviation hub, significantly enhancing the state’s air connectivity.
The Budget also proposed an investment of Rs 72,000 crore in the power sector. The allocation will support thermal, hydro, solar, and battery energy storage projects to strengthen electricity infrastructure and meet the state’s growing energy requirements.
In the agriculture sector, the government has earmarked Rs 4,000 crore for irrigation projects in the Brahmaputra Valley, aiming to improve irrigation coverage and enhance farm productivity.
The Budget reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of tea garden workers and tea tribes, with continued support for programmes focused on healthcare, nutrition and improving living standards.
Healthcare received a significant boost with the announcement of 33,000 new recruitments across the sector. The appointments are expected to strengthen district hospitals and improve access to public healthcare services.
In higher education, the government said it would continue recruiting faculty members for universities, colleges and newly established educational institutions to address staff shortages and improve academic infrastructure.
The Budget also prioritised youth employability through new skill development programmes. Training will be provided in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), visual effects (VFX) and foreign languages, including English, Japanese and Korean, to enhance employment opportunities in India and overseas.
On the infrastructure front, the government announced plans to accelerate the development of roads, bridges, rail networks and airport connectivity across the state.
Among the key announcements was the proposal to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital, with the objective of promoting balanced regional development and improving administrative accessibility in Upper Assam.
Presenting the Budget, Baruah said the government’s focus remains on creating jobs, strengthening infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and continuing welfare measures for various sections of society.
