New Delhi, July 23(APAC Media): Sony has introduced the FX5, a new full-frame cinema camera that adds 5K open gate recording, built-in AI processing and internal RAW recording to its Cinema Line. The camera is positioned above the FX3 and is aimed at professional filmmakers and content creators looking for more flexible shooting options.
The Sony FX5 features a 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the new BIONZ XR2 image processor. It supports 5K recording at up to 60fps and 4K recording at up to 120fps. Sony has also confirmed that a future software update will enable 5K 120fps and 4K 240fps recording.
A key addition is 5K open gate recording, which captures the entire 3:2 sensor area. This allows editors to crop footage into different formats, including vertical videos for social media, without losing image quality. The camera also supports internal 16-bit RAW recording in Sony’s X-OCN format, removing the need for an external RAW recorder.
The FX5 includes AI-powered autofocus with human pose estimation for more accurate subject tracking. It also introduces Auto Tracing White Balance, which combines visible light and infrared data to improve colour consistency. Other notable features include Dual Gain Shooting with native ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800, a claimed dynamic range of more than 15 stops, a 3.5-inch articulating touchscreen, built-in cooling fan, wired LAN connectivity and support for anamorphic lenses.
Sony has priced the FX5 at $4,900 for the body, while the version with the XLR-H2 audio handle costs $5,500. The camera is expected to go on sale globally from mid-August. Sony has also announced an optional detachable electronic viewfinder, as the FX5 does not include a built-in EVF.
