Trichy: Chennai-based Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) has come forward to fund the construction of the proposed 100 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) of Trichy Corporation in Panjapur and submitted a DPR to take up the operation and maintenance of the proposed STP for a period of 15 years after commissioning.
The sewage collection of Trichy city is expected to reach 140 MLD in 2031. Although the corporation has an 88.64 MLD capacity STP in Panjapur, the plant will be insufficient to cater to future needs, including those of rural areas to be added to the city. To address this need, Trichy Corporation passed a resolution to dismantle the old STP after constructing a modern STP to handle 100 MLD of sewage, set to become the largest in the city. The new STP is expected to cost 220 crore, with around 40% of the project cost being supported by the AMRUT scheme and the remaining 60% being sponsored by TWIC under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The firm will collect 13% interest for the investment and do the maintenance for 15 years.
The new STP will retreat the sewage using sequencing bioreactor (SBR) technology, a seepage-free infrastructure.
