New Delhi: Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), an aerospace and defence solutions provider, recently announced a collaboration with Satellogic Inc. The joint efforts of TASL and Satellogic will focus on the establishment and development of local space technology capabilities in India.
The partnership, unveiled on Wednesday, marks TASL’s inaugural foray into satellite technology, positioning itself as a key player in the rapidly expanding Indian defence and commercial markets.
Satellogic, recognised for its leadership in sub-metre resolution Earth Observation (EO) data collection, considers this collaboration a significant milestone as it ventures into the dynamic Indian landscape.
The core objective of this collaboration is to design and develop a new satellite, integrating multiple payloads on a single platform to generate a diverse range of data over India.
TASL highlighted that the project’s initiation will involve comprehensive training, knowledge transfer, and local assembly of optical sub-metre resolution EO satellites, with the maiden launch planned as TSAT-1A.
A vital aspect of the collaboration is the emphasis on manufacturing satellites and generating imagery within India, specifically catering to national defence and commercial applications. To facilitate this, TASL is setting up a satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) plant at its Vemagal facility in Karnataka.
Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of TASL, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, citing Satellogic’s best-in-class technology and entrepreneurial mindset. He added, ”Additionally, TASL will also work with local SMEs for payloads and other technologies to bolster India content.”
In response to the collaboration, Emiliano Kargieman, CEO and Founder of Satellogic, highlighted that their goal is to advance commercial space capabilities and broaden access to critical information for applications such as security, sustainability, and energy.
This collaboration represents a major milestone for Satellogic, as it marks their second space systems customer following a prior agreement with an international space agency, according to the joint statement.
