New Delhi: TDK Corp, the Japanese electronic parts manufacturer, is set to produce lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery cells for Apple iPhones in India.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, confirmed through X (formerly Twitter), saying, “TDK, a leading supplier of cells to Apple, is setting up a 180-acre facility in Manesar, Haryana to build cells for batteries which will be used in the Made In India iPhones. Several 1000 new jobs will be created and an increase in domestic value addition.”
Chandrasekhar said this move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, aiming to enhance India’s mobile manufacturing ecosystem.
Chandrasekhar praised the initiative, emphasising its contribution to deepening the electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India. The facility’s cells will be provided to Apple’s lithium-ion battery assembler, Sunwoda Electronics.
Apple has been assembling iPhones in India since 2017, initially through Wistron and later Foxconn, and currently has a total of 14 suppliers in the country. Recently, the Indian Government confirmed that Tata Group will commence the production of Apple iPhones in India for export to global markets within two and a half years.
