New Delhi: NITI Aayog recently introduced a document titled “Senior Care Reforms in India: Reimagining the Senior Care Paradigm.” Led by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, the report aims to imbibe technology and AI into senior care.
Innovative technology is rapidly transforming the landscape of senior care, offering solutions to address various needs and challenges faced by the elderly population. From wearables for smart monitoring to personal emergency response systems and smart home automation, these advancements are reshaping how elderly individuals live independently and receive care. The report suggested the following technologies to enhance senior care:
- Wearables and Monitoring Devices: Wearable devices such as activity trackers, blood pressure monitors, and smart watches are becoming increasingly popular among seniors. Brands like Apple Watch, FitBit, and Samsung Galaxy Watch offer features like continuous glucose monitoring and wearable pain relief technology. Specialised devices like fall detection sensors and GPS trackers provide added safety measures, alerting caregivers or emergency services in case of a fall or medical emergency.
- Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS): PERS devices are wearable gadgets equipped with features like fall detection and GPS tracking, allowing seniors to call for emergency help quickly and easily.
- Smart Home Automation: Smart home systems enable seniors to manage their homes efficiently, controlling lighting, temperature, and security features through voice commands or mobile apps.
- Medication Management Systems: These systems help seniors take their medication on time with reminders, alarms, and automated pill dispensers, ensuring adherence to prescribed regimens.
- Assistive Aids and Devices: Devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and hearing aids enhance mobility and independence for elderly individuals.
- Virtual Reality and Robotic Assistance: Virtual reality technology offers immersive experiences, reducing social isolation, while robotic companions and cleaners assist with household tasks.
- Digital Assistants and Social Networking: Digital assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home aid in daily routines, while social networking platforms facilitate connectivity and reduce loneliness.
Encouraging senior citizens to become digitally literate
It’s crucial to identify and address seniors’ specific needs and challenges with digital technology. This involves designing user-friendly instructional materials, collaborating with local organisations for digital literacy campaigns, and making digital tools more accessible through discounts and support services.
The following suggestions were made in the report to enhance seniors’ digital engagement and increase efficiency of service to the elderly:
- Offer senior discounts for digital tools.
- Optimise digital interfaces with larger screens and clearer layouts.
- Provide installation, maintenance, and ongoing support.
- Design user-friendly platforms for telemedicine, e-banking, etc.
- Foster inter-generational connections through digital platforms.
- Develop age-friendly service delivery platforms.
- Create a comprehensive “Senior Citizens App.”
- Ensure seniors’ safety with location tracking and emergency features.
- Innovate digital assistive devices like speech-to-text systems.
- Implement robust digital safety measures, including education on internet safety.
- Provide toll-free support for digital assistance.
- Expedite resolution of senior complaints regarding online fraud.
Bery said, “The release of this report is one of the stepping stones toward India’s commitment to achieve the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. It is important to extensively prioritise the application of technology and Artificial Intelligence for senior care. It is time to start thinking about the special dimensions of senior care in addition to the medical and social dimensions.”
Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health) NITI Aayog, stressed the need for dignity-driven, safe, and productive ageing, underscoring the significance of family values in fostering a supportive environment for the elderly.
The position paper also delineates specific interventions across health, social, economic/financial, and digital domains, aiming to address the evolving needs of seniors comprehensively. Access to the full report is available on the NITI Aayog website under the Reports section.
