New Delhi: The Delhi govt has announced that the National Buildings Construction Corporation will be constructing an electric bus depot in South Delhi. The govt. claims it to be India’s largest and first electric bus-parking facility. In addition to having 16 maintenance pits, rooftop solar panels, and EV charging stations, the parking lot is planned to accommodate 434 buses.
The project aligns with the Green Drive initiative announced by the Delhi government. Under the green drive, the govt. plans to switch public transportation to electric vehicles. After CNG, the switch to electric vehicles is the biggest transition for the national capital. The initiatives are crucial since the Delhi government has chosen to use e-vehicles necessitating the preparation of infrastructure exclusively.
This depot will be a zero-discharge facility which means that it won’t produce any waste. The project will be efficient and environmentally friendly since 112 MW of solar panels will be mounted on the roof to supply the parking structures electricity needs. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot laid the foundation of the depot in Vasant Vihar. The LG was the chief guest at the ceremony while Gahlot was the guest of honor.
