Mumbai: In a recent administrative reshuffle, Iqbal Singh Chahal has been appointed as the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) in the Maharashtra government. Chahal, a 1989-batch IAS officer, will now oversee the state’s Home Department, which is responsible for maintaining law and order, internal security, and public safety across Maharashtra.
Before this new role, Chahal served as the Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), where he gained significant recognition for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. His management of Mumbai’s public health response was widely acknowledged as a key factor in controlling the outbreak in the densely populated city.
Chahal takes over the position from Sitaram Kunte, who recently retired from the post. His appointment comes at a crucial time, as the state continues to tackle various law and order challenges. As the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Chahal will play a critical role in shaping policies related to internal security, crime control, and disaster management.
Chahal’s extensive experience in public administration and crisis management is expected to contribute significantly to his new responsibilities in the Home Department. His leadership will be instrumental in navigating the complexities of maintaining security and public order in one of India’s most populous states.
