New Delhi: The government has approved three pilot projects to explore using green hydrogen in steel production as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects will test new ways to reduce carbon emissions in steelmaking by replacing coal with hydrogen.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has selected three companies for the pilot projects: Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). Together, these projects will have a production capacity of around 3,290 tonnes per day.
The government is providing Rs 347 crore in support to help launch these initiatives, which aim to prove that hydrogen can be safely and economically used in steel production. The projects are expected to be up and running within the next three years, to scale up green hydrogen technology in the steel sector.
