Pune: The Indian Army celebrated its 77th Army Day with grandeur at the Southern Command Investiture Ceremony 2025 held in Pune at the iconic BEG & Centre Parade Ground, Khadki.
A remarkable highlight of the event was the display of AI-powered robotic MULE (Multi-Utility Legged Equipment) dogs, marking a significant leap in the modernization of the Army’s logistics and surveillance capabilities.
Transition from Traditional Mules to Robotic MULE Dogs
As part of its modernization efforts, the these advanced robotic systems capable of performing crucial tasks in challenging terrains, will not only replace the long serves canines of the Indian Army but also reduce the risk of life loss in critical situations.
Brigadier Hardeep Singh Sohi, Deputy Director General in the Government of India, shared a video showcasing the robotic MULE dogs in action during the parade, emphasizing their role in revolutionizing the Army’s operational capabilities.

Features of Robotic MULE Dogs
The robotic MULE dogs showcased at the event represent cutting-edge technology in ground-based robotics. Designed for unstructured urban and natural environments, these four-legged machines are engineered to perform a range of critical defence tasks. Key features include:
- Payload Capacity: Capable of carrying 12–15 kilograms of supplies or equipment.
- Extreme Weather Durability: Functionality in temperatures ranging from -40 to +55 degrees Celsius.
- Surveillance Excellence: Equipped with thermal cameras and 360-degree sensors for effective monitoring.
The smaller version of the robotic dog is designed for reconnaissance missions, relaying real-time footage to military posts. Meanwhile, the larger version is capable of direct combat and is equipped with an assault rifle mounted on its back.
Procurement and Development
In 2023, the Indian Army reportedly placed an order for 100 robotic MULE dogs, with the potential for a larger procurement based on performance. Under the fourth tranche of emergency procurement, these orders are mandated to be placed with Indian companies. However, it remains unclear if the Delhi-based supplier is fully manufacturing these units in India.
The robotic MULE dogs address a critical need for surveillance and logistics in mountainous regions, particularly in operations involving suspected terrorist hideouts. Their ability to perform these tasks reduces the risk to human soldiers and canine units, making them a valuable addition to the Army’s arsenal.
Technological Roots
The concept of robotic dogs originates from the American robotics company Boston Dynamics, whose “Spot-The Agile Mobile Robot” has been successfully deployed by the US military and police. These robots boast 360-degree perception, advanced mobility, and real-time intelligence capabilities, enabling efficient and safe operations.
India’s adaptation to acquire such technology showcases its commitment to integrating cutting-edge solutions into its defence framework. The robotic MULE dogs are expected to enhance the Army’s operational readiness and reduce the risks associated with traditional human and animal deployments in extreme conditions.
The Army Day parade not only reflected the Indian Army’s rich traditions and valour but also highlighted its focus on embracing technological advancements to address contemporary challenges. The inclusion of robotic MULE dogs signifies a transformative step in the Army’s journey toward modernization, operational efficiency, and the safety of its personnel.
The Southern Command’s Investiture Ceremony remains a testament to the Indian Army’s ethos of discipline, precision, and innovation, ensuring the nation’s security in an evolving global landscape.
