New Delhi: Toyota aims to tackle carbon emissions in India with a mix of green technologies, including EVs, hybrids, and flex-fuel vehicles.
Toyota’s Multi-Technology Approach to Carbon Neutrality
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced its plans to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) in India as part of a broader multi-technology strategy to address carbon emissions. Speaking at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tadashi Asazuma, Deputy Managing Director, Sales-Service-Used Car, TKM, emphasized that while EVs are important, they alone cannot solve the emission problem.
EV Launch in the Pipeline
While Toyota has yet to confirm a timeline for its EV launch in India, Vikram Gulati, Executive Vice President and Country Head at TKM, noted that the company is assessing market trends and customer preferences. “Globally, there has been a slowdown in EV demand, and we want to gauge how Indian consumers respond,” he said. Gulati also highlighted that Toyota has had access to EV technology since 1996 and recently showcased its electric models, including the bZ4X and URBAN BEV Concept, at the expo.
Expanding Capacity to Meet Demand
In response to growing demand for SUVs and MPVs in India, Toyota is ramping up its production capacity. The company recently announced a ₹3,300 crore investment to add a third production line at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. This expansion, expected to be operational by 2026, will increase annual production capacity to 4.4 lakh units.
The Bigger Picture
Toyota’s approach reflects the challenges of transitioning to greener mobility in a market like India, where energy diversity and infrastructure development remain critical. While EVs form a key part of the strategy, the company believes a mix of technologies is essential to achieve carbon neutrality at scale.
