New Delhi: The Union government is set to launch the IndiaAI Compute Portal in the coming days, aiming to streamline access to AI computing resources for central ministries and state governments. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the launch is expected within a week.
AI Compute Access for Government and Research Institutions
The IndiaAI Compute Portal will allow eligible stakeholders to request computing power, with the government subsidizing about 40% of costs. The IndiaAI Compute Pillar has already informed various ministries and departments about pricing and access details.
10 Firms to Provide 14,000 GPUs
The mission has secured 14,000 GPUs through ten companies that met the lowest bids. A majority of these GPUs, 9,216 will come from Yotta Data Services, including 8,192 Nvidia H100 chips. Other providers include AWS, Tata Communications, E2E Networks, Jio Platforms, and CtrlS Datacenters.
AWS, through four managed service providers (CMS Computers, Locuz Enterprise Solutions, Orient Technologies, and Vensysco Technologies), will supply 1,200 low-end GPUs, including AWS Inferentia 2 and Trainium 1 chips. Jio Platforms has committed to providing 208 Nvidia H200 GPUs and 104 AMD MI300X GPUs, with plans to bid for additional GPUs in the next procurement round on April 30.
Government’s Push for AI Development
India’s AI mission comes as the country looks to develop homegrown AI models, following China’s DeepSeek initiative. The procurement of GPUs is expected to provide computing power for research institutions and startups working on foundational AI models, which power applications like chatbots and generative AI.
