New Delhi: The central government has received 67 proposals for the development of indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) foundational models as part of the Rs 10,370-crore IndiaAI Mission. These proposals are expected to help create AI solutions tailored to India’s unique linguistic, cultural, and sectoral needs.
Focus on Local AI Solutions
The IndiaAI Mission, launched earlier this year, aims to position India as a global leader in AI by fostering collaboration between the government, academia, and the private sector. The mission focuses on creating AI models that address India’s challenges, particularly in agriculture, healthcare, and public service delivery. By developing local AI solutions, the government aims to ensure better data security, improve privacy, and make AI more relevant and accessible to the country’s diverse population.
Proposals for Large Language Models (LLMs)
Among the 67 proposals received, 20 are specifically focused on developing large language models (LLMs). These proposals come from a variety of organizations, including Sarvam AI, CoRover.ai, and Ola. These LLMs will be designed to understand and process multiple languages and dialects spoken across India, ensuring that AI technology can be adapted to the country’s diverse linguistic landscape.
Sector-Specific AI Models
In addition to LLMs, some proposals focus on sector-specific models. For instance, one proposal seeks to create an AI model to assist medical professionals in diagnosing and treating breast cancer, while others target agriculture, public services, and other critical sectors. These models are expected to be more specialized and offer localized solutions for pressing issues in various industries.
Evaluation and Funding
The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has set up a high-level technical committee to review the feasibility of these proposals. The evaluation process is expected to take about a month. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, the government has also committed to providing financial and equity-based funding to developers, depending on the scalability and viability of their models.
