A Political Journey Rooted in Student Activism
Born in 1974 in Nandgarh village, Haryana, Rekha Gupta moved to Delhi with her family at the age of two. Her father, an officer at the State Bank of India, ensured she received her education in Delhi, where she later pursued studies at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University.
Her political career began in 1992 through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and by 1996-97, she was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), advocating for student rights and educational reforms.
Gupta’s rise in politics continued when she was elected as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007. During her tenure, she played a key role in improving civic amenities, including parks, libraries, and public swimming pools.
She also launched the “Sumedha Yojana,” a scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to economically weaker female students pursuing higher education. Her work as Chairperson of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee further solidified her role in women’s empowerment.
The Strategy Behind Rekha Gupta’s Selection
Gupta’s elevation as Chief Minister is believed to be comes as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its voter base in Delhi, particularly among women.
Historically, the city has seen influential female chief ministers, including Congress’ Sheila Dikshit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj. With this appointment, the party is looking to reinforce its focus on women-led governance while also offering a fresh face to Delhi’s political landscape.
Despite being a first-time MLA, Gupta has extensive experience in the BJP, having served as General Secretary of the party’s Delhi unit and as the National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha.
She was also a contender for the Mayor’s position in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in 2022, where she was pitted against AAP’s Shelly Oberoi.
Her appointment also signals the BJP’s intent to contrast its governance approach with that of AAP, which suffered a major electoral defeat. The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections saw the BJP win 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP secured only 22.

Challenges Ahead
While the BJP has successfully reclaimed Delhi, Rekha Gupta faces significant challenges in governing a city that has been under AAP’s administration for the past decade.
Infrastructure, pollution, education and healthcare remain key issues that require immediate attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his remarks following the BJP’s victory, assured Delhiites that the new government would prioritize development, transparency and effective governance.
However, Former CM of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, in a social media post, extended his congratulations to Gupta, stating:
“Many congratulations to Rekha Gupta ji on becoming the Chief Minister of Delhi. I hope that she will fulfil all the promises made to the people of Delhi. We will support her in every work for the development and welfare of the people of Delhi.”
Meanwhile, the last CM of the capital Atishi said:
“I congratulate Rekha Gupta on being appointed as Delhi’s Chief Minister. I hope the BJP fulfils all the promises it has made to the people of Delhi. On behalf of AAP, I want to assure you that our party remains committed to supporting the BJP in all development efforts for the betterment of the city. She will be the fourth Chief Minister of Delhi, and it is encouraging to see more women actively participating in politics with great enthusiasm.”
After Rekha Gupta takes charge, all eyes will be on how she steers Delhi’s administration, tackles key urban challenges and implements the promises made during the BJP’s campaign.
Her tenure will not only shape the future of Delhi but also influence BJP’s political trajectory in the national capital.
