Kolkata: The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata has started operating the new ATC tower in the “dark zone”. Construction began on this new Air Traffic Control tower in 2018 and this was completed recently.
Incidentally from the location where this new ATC tower had been created, some portions at the front of the new terminal will not be visible. The movement of the planes in these areas has to be controlled through cameras.
Even where the current ATC tower is located, a portion of the new terminal towards the south is not visible. The plane movements here too are already being monitored by cameras.
Therefore the concept and dynamics of this “dark zone” are not new to the functioning of the Kolkata airport. Only for the new ATC tower, the radius of the “dark zone” has increased.
From yesterday, the ATC tower had started functioning on an experimental basis. For now, the monitoring and aeroplane control will.be done daily from the new tower from two to four in the afternoon. At that time the existing tower will be on stand-by mode, though it will function for the rest of the day.
The monitoring, surveillance and control from the new ATC tower will gradually increase but the total shift from the existing tower will take quite some time.
